I just wanted to sauna. That's how Heat Retreat began. I'm Matt, and I struggled to find authentic wood-burning saunas in Western New York. And thus my first mobile sauna was born, crafted with careful attention to detail within a cargo trailer.

Sauna became a critical coping mechanism for my anxiety—something I didn't always struggle with. The pandemic and isolation created that anxiety, and the sauna became my reset. I started hosting monthly "Sauna Sunday" potlucks at my home, and witnessed firsthand how the heat created community, connection, and healing.

The sauna became a safe place to "rest & reset". The "heat and novelty" of the sauna provides the "social lubricant" that alcohol does in pubs. It's all the benefits of connecting with people without the downs. Instead of waking up with a hangover, you awake feeling healthy, rested, and creatively inspired.

I launched Heat Retreat in 2025 as a family-owned passion project. My mission is simple: bring the healing power of authentic Finnish sauna and build lasting community and connection, one backyard at a time.
