Sauna & Contrast Therapy

Learn how to maximize the healing benefits of heat and cold. Science-backed. Ancient tradition. Modern delivery.

Ancient Wisdom

A 10,000 Year Tradition

Sauna has its origins in Finland, where the practice dates back nearly 10,000 years. It's often said there are more saunas than people in Finland—roughly 3.3 million saunas for 5.5 million people. That's one sauna for every 1.7 people.

Finland has been ranked the world's happiest country for eight consecutive years (2018–2025), largely due to high levels of trust, strong social safety nets, free education, and a close connection to nature.

"The Finnish sauna is a great equalizer. It represents the non-hierarchical nature of Nordic society. There's even a saying: 'Everyone is created equal, but nowhere more than in a sauna.' A former president can sit beside a butcher."

How to Sauna for Maximum Benefit

Follow these guidelines to optimize your experience and results.

Duration: 15 Minute Sessions

Hormesis principle: A low dose of stress triggers beneficial adaptation, making you stronger.

Recommended Protocol:

Three 15-minute sessions (with breaks between), three times per week.

Ideal Temperature: 160-200°F

This is the optimal range for triggering heat shock proteins and cardiovascular benefits.

The Golden Ratio:

Temperature + Humidity = 200

Example: If temp is 170°F, create steam (löyly) by pouring water over hot rocks until humidity is 30%. 170 + 30 = 200.

What to Expect Inside
  • Increased heart rate – your body is working
  • First session will be hard – you may only last 5 min, subsequent easier
  • Fight, Flight, or Surrender – your body can handle more; tame the impulsive mind

Pro tip: Sauna hats can help!

Contrast Therapy (Cold Plunge)

Alternate between hot sauna and cold plunge for maximum benefit.

  • Effective temp: 39-60°F (colder = more advanced)
  • Duration: Benefits start at 30 seconds, up to 3 minutes
  • Benefits: Builds agency under stress, improves resilience, boosts alertness

Why it works: You feel it immediately. No belief required—the body responds before the mind. Builds trust in the nervous system.

Safety First: Not for Everyone

Sauna and contrast therapy are powerful tools, but they're not suitable for everyone. Please consult your doctor if you have any concerns.

Avoid Sauna Use If You Have:

  • Uncontrolled cardiovascular conditions
  • Pregnancy (especially heat exposure)
  • Acute illness or fever
  • Recently consumed alcohol

Remember to Always Hydrate!

Drink plenty of water before, during breaks, and after your sauna session. Dehydration can negate many of the benefits and cause discomfort.
